IBM Smarter Planet Initiative

Building a Smarter Planet by IBM recently created a 5 minute video to explain what is currently happening when the digital world meets the physical and intellectual and the emerging trend of Internet of Things.

Michael Wing, one of the IBMers featured in the video says, “Over the past century but accelerating over the past couple of decades, we have seen the emergence of a kind of global data field. The planet itself – natural systems, human systems, physical objects – have always generated an enormous amount of data, but we didn’t used to be able to hear it, to see it, to capture it. Now we can because all of this stuff is now instrumented. And it’s all interconnected, so now we can actually have access to it. So, in effect, the planet has grown a central nervous system.”

The result is a global data field according to the video.

If we can actually begin to see the patterns in the data, then we have a much better chance of getting our arms around this. That’s where societies become more efficient, that’s where more innovation is sparked.

In a way, we can look at the planet now as a matrix of information, creation and transmission system with the universe hearing what it has to say but we were too pre-occupied to do so.

Update: Coincidentally, Daryl from Unique-Frequency published an opinion piece pertaining to the Internet of Things on his site. He explains that “we’re certainly at a stage where organisations need to at least start thinking about these things because technology (and the world) is changing so fast that it’s hard to keep up.” Check out his article, it’s definitely worth the read.

  • Love it. The coming of the home operating system is inevitable.
  • The line between the physical and digital gets even thinner.
