This afternoon, I stumbled across this video by Guy Kawasaki on Google Videos. I spent my entire hour watching this fantastic talk given by him at the 2007 Event Marketing Conference entitled “The Art of Innovation.”
Summary of Presentation
Take note that these are just a few of the key points Guy made in his presentation. My summary is just a basic analysis of the video but Guy’s analysis is far more in-depth and contains case studies with added humour. View the video to see the other points Guy made.
1. Mantra Instead of Mission Statement
Keep it short; 2 or 3 words to be precise. Make meaning out of your product and brand by having a mantra. A mantra technically supports why your product, your service, your brand your company or your event exists at all. Think of what your target audience would choose if they were going to pick your mantra for you.
2. Break The Curve
“True innovators are not people trying to do thing 10 or 15 percent better but they try to get to the next curve.” You need to do something that is different; not just customizing the current industry because it will not help you becomes the best. For example, if you are an ice making company, jump start anew as a refrigerator company instead of making more ice!
3. Do Not Listen to Bozo’s
They are the people that will always try bring you down to their level because what you came up with is not yet acceptable. The most dangerous would be the successful people who are telling you not to do something because you tend to listen to their advice. Never let anyone tell you what you cannot do or whether your product or brand is not good enough.
Innovation is the specific instrument of entrepreneurship. There are a couple of theories on innovation such as breakthrough, incremental, open source to name but a few. Innovation is a must for 2010.
