It has been 6 years since Facebook was launched; February 4, 2004. And during that time, they have enjoyed tremendous growth since the beginning. Currently, in their sixth year, Facebook announced that they have now more than 400 million people in their user base as part of their birthday celebration.

This number has since more than doubled from the previous year where their user base was only recording 150 million active users. The numbers are a testament that 2009 is the best year for Facebook yet. On top of that, Facebook has also overtaken Yahoo as second most popular website.

Here’s an infographic released by Pingdom to visualize how Facebook became the social networking juggernaut.

  • There are 6,292,030,277 people who DON'T use Facebook as apposed to 400,000,000 who do. I know I'm with the majority.
  • Then you are part of the potential market. :)
  • Hi Nizam,

Nice collection of stats and breakdown, cheers. I do wish people (not you, those putting the stats together) would stop using the "one of the biggest countries" argument though. Facebook is made up of many different users and cultures from numerous countries. If Facebook was a real country, you'd have to have every person leaving their own countries to live there - probably not very realistic.

By all means, compare individual geographical numbers on Facebook, but using the collated info seems a bit of a cheat. ;-)
  • Hey Danny, I do agree with the point that you've made. My take on why people use this comparison is, probably to translate the massive scale that Facebook has grown over the years, so that it would be easier for the average users to take note within a single glance.
  • More than likely - just wish they'd use the one similar to the China comparison. Say to someone that Facebook is 1/3 the size of China's population is pretty compelling on its own :)
  • That comparison with China would suffice and compelling like what you've said. Thanks for your input Danny :)
  • Nizam, thanks for sharing this graphic. Every time I think about putting up a Fan page on FaceBook and can come back here and get some incentive. It's amazing to see so much growth. I don't think that Buzz will ever rival the success of FaceBook.
  • You're welcome Ileane! Buzz will never come close, I would love to find out the number of users who are actively using Buzz though.
