Social media is a phrase being tossed around a lot these days and the best way to define social media is to break it down. Media is an instrument on communication, like a newspaper or a radio, so social media would be a social instrument of communication.

Social media is so much more than just people sharing ideas and thoughts with other people, it is the creation and exchange of ‘User Generated Content’ – the ability to transform broadcast media monologues into a social media dialogues; a platform where information is spread out so fast and widely that puts television, radio and print media to shame.

It is also well-documented that social media is not a fad through a fantastic video presentation by Equalman. On top of that, reports also show that students especially are addicted to the whole social media scene like drugs.

On top of that InSites Consulting has released a study on the result of a market research in January 2010. In an online survey of 2,884 consumers spread over 14 countries between the age of 18 to 55 years old, they found 13 mind-blowing facts on social media in 2010.

13. 20% of the online population are already users of a social networking site
